For years there has been rumors surrounding the race of country music legend Johnny Cash’s first wife. Johnny was a huge star in the 1950s-1980s, and his fan base was mainly white Americans in the Deep South, where racism was at its peak.

And Johnny Cash’s fans would never have never accepted him marrying a Black woman. But that’s exactly what he did.

MTO News has confirmed that new evidence has conclusively proven his first wife was black and her great-great grandmother a slave.

Johnny’s first wife Vivian Liberto died in 2005 at the age of 71, she was believed to be of mixed Italian and German ancestry.

She was married to Cash from 1954-66.

In 1965, when Cash was arrested on drug offenses, Vivian appeared in court in El Paso to support him and a photograph seemed to show her as black – enraging white supremacists at the time.

Mixed-race marriages were illegal in the United States until 1967, and it was banned in the Southern United States until much later.
