Miley Cyrus Off to Never-Never Land on Upcoming Heavy Metal Covers Album

Miley Cyrus had so much fun covering Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” at Glastonbury Festival last year that she says she’s working on a full album of songs from the metal masters. In a chat with designer Rick Owens for Interview Magazine Miley revealed that she was speaking to him from a bed, though not her own.

When Owens asked if there was a story behind that, Cyrus revealed that there was, and it was a good one. “We’ve been working on a Metallica cover album and I’m here working on that,” she said, explaining that the COVID-19 pandemic initially had her in a creative funk, but that the Metallica project rebooted the right side of her brain. “We’re so lucky to be able to continue to work on our art during all of this. At first, it felt uninspiring and now I’ve been totally ignited.”

Miley, 27, didn’t give much more information on the project or who she’s recording it with and a spokesperson for the singer could not be reached for additional comment at press time. It’s worth noting, though, that Ozzy Osbourne producer/guitarist Andrew Watt played guitar in Miley’s band when she covered Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” on Saturday Night Live in April.

It’s been a year of killer covers from Cyrus, who has blessed us with a great version of Blondie’s “Heart of Glass,” The Beatles’ “Help!” and crushing The Cure’s “Boys Don’t Cry” and The Cranberries’ “Zombie” during a virtual Save Our Stages Fest in Los Angeles over the weekend. And, not for nothing, she tore through Temple of the Dog’s “Say Hello 2 Heaven” at the 2019 Chris Cornell tribute show.

The singer also transformed her Los Angeles backyard into a disco oasis for her Miley Cyrus Backyard Sessions special edition of MTV Unplugged on Friday. During the gig she tackled Britney Spears’ “Gimme More,” Nico’s 1967 track “These Days,” Pearl Jam’s “Just Breathe,” and a collaboration with sister Noah on “I Got So High That I Saw Jesus.”
