Babyface Ray Looks to Inspire Listeners With His Brand of ‘Reality Rap’: Emerging Artists Spotlight

Welcome to Emerging Artists Spotlight, the Billboard series where we highlight a musician or band who has recently made their debut on the Emerging Artists chart. Whether they are new to the industry, or have been around for a while but are just starting to have a chart impact, the intention is to showcase where they are here and now. This week’s pick is rising rapper Babyface Ray, who debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums chart dated Feb. 27 thanks to his new EP, Unf–kwitable.

Don’t let the name fool you. Babyface Ray isn’t a soft, cheeky rapper. In his song “If You Know, You Know,” he lets his peers know right off the bat that he and his affiliates aren’t the ones to mess around with,” rapping: My young boy be hoopin’/The other one is shootin’.”

Repping Detroit, Ray’s gutsy delivery and grit make him a compelling act on the rap scene. His new EP, Unf–kwitable, topped the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart this week and is oozing with earsplitting street bangers. When he isn’t teaming up with his Detroit co-star Kash Doll on the club-worthy single “Allowance,” he’s busy spilling gems about the everyday struggle on “Real N—-as Don’t Rap.”

“What you should know about my music is that it ranges, and it’s a different sound,” says the Wavy Gang/EMPIRE signee. “My music brings people into my world and my everyday reality. I know people can relate to my life and story. I call my music reality rap.”

Two weeks ago, Ray released the video for his EP standout “Like Daisy Lane.” Amassing 1 million views on YouTube, he reminds his haters why stunting is a habit, flaunting his icy chains in front of his crew.
